9) Samos, Greece
How about living out the rest of your days on a Greek island? It doesn’t sound half bad, and it’s entirely possible on the affordable island of Samos. The city is nearly crime-free, and the laid-back lifestyle is a stark contrast to the “go, go, go” pace we’re used to in the States. Retirees are advised to rent for their first year while they get a feel for the area; a small apartment can be had for less than $1,000 USD per month. The dining alone may convince you to go Greek; farmer’s markets here are abundant with fresh, locally produced fruit, vegetables, olive oil and of course, wine, and you can’t beat the balmy Mediterranean weather.
