8) Igor Stravinsky

Stravinsky is a feted Russian composer whose work is considered to be the impetus for musical modernism, and he may seem an odd choice to be on any list of famous, successful drinkers. Studious and classically trained, he was taken on as a student by Rimsky-Korsakov, and later became renowned for his collaborative work with Serge Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. Performer, concert pianist and conductor, Stravinsky’s influence is indisputable. Fewer know, however, of his serious appreciation for whiskey. In fact, he developed a strong bond with the hard-drinking Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Both apparently enjoyed the company of women, and had a herculean capacity to consume scotch. Stravinsky himself is quoted as saying, “My God, so much I liked to drink Scotch that sometimes I think my name is Igor Stra-whiskey”.
