5) Ulysses S Grant
General Grant was a whiskey lover. He was raised during a time in American history when drinking was socially acceptable, and liquor was often considered to be a tonic for good health. Grant and most of his army drank, and they drank regularly, and frequently. Not only was alcohol good for calming one’s mood, it also helped reduce stomach problems from eating food that was improperly prepared, or rotten. Grant’s heavy drinking resulted in him suffering public ridicule many times, but he managed to control his drinking and became one of the most respected generals of his generation. Grant’s love of whiskey never was forgotten, however. President Abraham Lincoln noted, “I wish some of you would tell me what brand of whiskey that Grant drinks. I would like to send a barrel of it to my other generals”.
