4) Thomas Jefferson
A famous founding father of the United States, Thomas Jefferson fervently believed that the well-being of the mind and of the body were one and the same. To have a healthy mind, people needed a healthy body. To this end, Jefferson maintained regular exercise, had a diet low in animal products, and daily indulged in alcohol. He even made wine at the White House during his presidency. Living to the remarkable age of 84, Jefferson enjoyed good health for most of his life, and partially attributed his longevity and vigor to his sensible attitudes towards drinking. “I double, however, the Doctor’s glass and a half of wine, and even treble it with a friend…Malt liquors and cider are my table drinks…”. He later proclaimed, “Beer, if drank with moderation, softens the temper, cheers the spirit, and promotes health”.
