6) Utilize the “Do Not Call” List

There is another way to further lessen your chances of being targeted by telemarketer scams. The Federal Trade Commission manages something called the Do Not Call list which prohibits registered phone numbers from receiving sales calls. You can easily register your home phone and cell phone online for this list for free. It can take up to 31 days for your number to be registered, so you may still receive telemarketing calls for the first month. After your number has been registered, you can still receive calls from other organizations like political groups, surveyors, charities, and debt collectors. Be aware that most legitimate companies respect the Do Not Call list and won’t call you. So, if you receive a call from a telemarketer, it’s probably a scam. Hang up and report the call to the Federal Trade Commission, or the Do Not Call web site.
