Winning an argument is critical for most people at some time in their lives. For some, the skill will be an integral part of their career such as with politicians, lawyers, and sports officials. For others, they may want to win an argument with their loved one, or, on the off-chance, a once-loved one. Or, perhaps you will want to establish yourself in your career by negotiating a higher salary, or better benefits.
Regardless of who you are, there will come a time in your life when winning an argument will be important. What many people don’t realize is that winning an argument is not difficult, as long as you keep a couple pieces of advice in your back pocket for the day when you will need these pointers.
Here are 11 essential tips that will help you deliver that impactful punch you need to win any argument you get into.
1) Know Your Stuff
Very few things will help you in an argument more than knowing what it is you are arguing about. You don’t necessarily have to be an expert in the subject, although it doesn’t hurt, but you should have some good knowledge.
Take for example a political campaign. Politicians need to have a vast knowledge of a variety of subjects, especially the “hot topics” of the past year. The topic can be international relations, the economy, or immigration. It is the politicians who have a good understanding of the subject matter, and just as important are well prepared in delivering their message, or plan, who succeed.
Depending on your situation, you should review your material, and be able to use that material when needed. For a lawyer presenting an important case, it may take weeks, or months of review to lay the case out as they intend, while an argument with a spouse may simply require you to have the ability to recall information effectively.
