5) Staying on the Brakes
The brake system in your car is extremely important for safe driving. However, too much unnecessary use can actually cause a lot of damage. If you ride the breaks, heat can build up due to friction. The excess heat can cause the brake fluid to boil, which makes it compressible. This is problematic, as compressible fluid will not build up the necessary system pressure to stop the car. Resultantly, you will become much more likely to get into an accident. Additionally, if you ride the brakes, the friction will wear down the brake pads. The quicker this happens, the more frequently they will need to be replaced. Therefore, if you are driving downhill and need to maintain a low speed, you are better off shifting to a lower gear and relying on the engine to slow you down instead.
