While New York State is not commonly known as a popular retirement spot, it has much to offer in terms of activities, environment, and support for seniors. Rich in terms of both nature and culture, New York has different lifestyles available to retirees with different interests and abilities. The places that made our list are north of New York City in the region known as Upstate New York. Most of the environment here is more rural than city. There are plenty of amenities and activities to be found within these communities, however. With that in mind, here are the 10 best places in New York for retirees.

1) Olean

Olean is a city in Cattaraugus County, in western New York, with a population of over 14,000 people. The age distribution of the population is well spread out, with 17.9% of residents being over the age of 65, and another 22.3% being between 45 and 64. The city is home to several retirement homes and nursing homes, including the Eden Heights of Olean assisted living center, which also provides Alzheimer’s care for residents in need. For active retirees looking for a place to spend some time with nature, Olean is home to Rock City Park, which has beautiful scenery and trails to hike.
